What needs to be done? |
St. Mary’s Church, Eversley, is a Grade 1
listed building. Every five years it is subject to an architects’
inspection. They carried
out their last inspection in 2006 and reported that work was required in
three main areas: the Tower, the Roof (particularly over
the Nave) and the Chancel. ROOF : Missing, broken and slipped tiles; unevenness of roof over nave; failure of some roof beams; gullies and guttering make nave vulnerable to leaks Work required: Nave roof needs lifting and re-laying; localised work to eliminate leaks; improvements to gullies, guttering and downpipes.CHANCEL Internal damp, particularly on east wall Work required: Remove cement-based rendering from east wall; repair brick-work, cover with a new lime render.TOWER Unsafe roof containing asbestos. Tiles, brickwork, flashing and lightning conductor need attention. Work required: Remove asbestos, fit new roof to tower, repair/replace some brickwork and tiles, extensive re-pointing, improvements to guttering and lightning conductor. We are pleased to report that building work on the roof and the chancel is now complete. The tower will be restored when we have enough money (see below). |

| What will it cost? |
The cost to St. Mary's of re-roofing the church and damp-proofing the
chancel has been approximately £90,000. The second phase of the restoration project concerns the church tower
and is estimated to cost £150,000.
We will not start this phase until we can secure the
necessary funds. The church obtains no funding from the Church of England, the state or any other external source. All the expenses of St Mary’s, including maintenance of the building, the salary of the Rector, and the donations we make to deserving causes are paid from the money given week by week by the parishioners. There is no other source of income. While some funding for these repairs may be available from grant bodies, the great majority of the cost of the repairs will have to be met by us. |

What have
we raised so far?
|
We have now raised approximately
£100,000 towards
the Church Restoration Appeal.
This is excellent progress and has enabled us to meet the cost of
repairs to the roof and chancel. We thank all those who have contributed
so far. The big challenge now is to maintain the rate of giving so that,
later in 2008 or in 2009, we are able to commence the essential work on the church
tower. Fundraising events have proved to be very popular and, in addition to raising money, have given a lot of pleasure to those who have taken part. We believe this reflects the 'village ethos' of Eversley where, given the opportunity, people are very willing to help each other and to support local activities. Long may it continue! We will try to keep you informed about other fundraising events (see the bottom of this page). Also, do please consider making a personal donation if you haven't yet done so. The names and contact details of members of the fundraising team appear at the end of this page should you wish to discuss the matter with them. |

If so, many thanks. Please use one of the following three ways (in
order or preference):

| Please give or send donations to: |
|
|||||||||||||||||||||
| Tax rebates from the Inland Revenue | We must make full use of the tax rebates available, so that for each £1000 raised we obtain a further £280 from the Inland Revenue. This needs to be done with the help of the donor. If you pay income tax or capital gains tax, please make this known when you make a donation by completing a Gift Aid Declaration (available in the church or from the Churchwarden). | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Recognition | The church will wish to note and record your generosity and thank you on behalf of current and future generations. If you wish to remain anonymous, please make this known when you make your donation. Actual sums donated will always remain confidential, unless the donor specifically wishes to make the sum public (this may be of interest to corporate donors). | |||||||||||||||||||||
